This is the list of hardware that we rarely see anymore, but modern products exist because of the groundwork they laid. That's why I named the title starting with Ubuntu*. Today's newer products have been produced because of these old, obsolete devices.
1. Storage Devices
- Floppy Disk: A magnetic medium that holds 720KB or 1.44 MB of data, used for storing data and operating systems.
- CD-ROM: A 650 MB optical compact disk used for storing data, music, and applications.
- DVD: A digital video disk with 4.7GB to 17.08GB of capacity, used mainly for storing videos.
- Blu-ray disk: An optical disk ranging from 25GB to 128GB, used for storing movies with multiple language tracks and subtitle options.
- Hard Disk Drive(HDD): A storage device that uses a spinning motor and magnetic platters to read and write data.
2. Dial-up Modem
- Connected to the internet over a phone line at speeds up to 56.6 Kbps.
3. Printer
- Laser printer: Toner(a black or coloured resin powder) is used.
- Inkjet printer: Ink cartridges(Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, & Black) are used.
4. Scanner
- Flatbed scanner: Used to digitize books, documents, and photos.
5. CRT Monitor
- A Cathode Ray Tube monitor, the bulky, heavy display technology that preceded flat-screen panels.
6. Digital Camera
- Digital SLR cameras were common for journalists or photographers.
7. Flashlight
- A flashlight was an essential item since blackouts happened from time to time.
Around the year 2000, a typical desktop setup included a CRT monitor, a dial-up modem, and a printer, often paired with a separate scanner and a stack of floppy disks or CDs for storage. Each of these devices did one job, and did it slowly. Booting up a computer, connecting to the internet, or transferring a file could take minutes rather than seconds.
Today most of that functionality lives inside a single laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Storage that once required a book of floppy disks or CDs now fits invisibly inside a phone or in the cloud. A dial-up modem's 56.6 Kbps connection has been replaced by high-speed fibre-optic and mobile networks that are thousands of times faster. Laser and inkjet printers still exist, but many documents never need to be printed at all, since they can be signed, shared, and stored digitally. Flatbed scanners have largely been replaced by a phone camera and a scanning app. CRT monitors, once so heavy that moving one required two people, have given way to thin, lightweight LCD or OLED screens. And flashlights are built into smartphones.
The overall trend is clear: physical size and weight have shrunk dramatically, while capability and portability have increased. Devices that once had to stay on a desk can now travel with us anywhere. This shift has changed not just how we use technology, but how and where we work. It's now common to answer emails from a beach, join a video call from a coffee shop, or finish a project from home. Remote and hybrid work have become mainstream partly because mobile devices made location largely irrelevant to getting work done.
This same shift is why the phrase "work-life balance" gained widespread use in recent decades. When work was tied to a stationary desktop computer in an office, the boundary between work and personal life was, in some ways, easier to see, even if hours were long. Mobile devices removed that physical boundary, making work possible anywhere and at any time. That flexibility is valuable, but it also created a new challenge: knowing when to stop. As a result, "work-life balance" emerged as a way to describe the conscious effort needed to separate professional responsibilities from personal time, now that technology no longer enforces that separation for us.
In short, the bulky, single-purpose hardware of the early 2000s didn't disappear so much as it evolved, changing its form into the compact, multifunctional devices we now carry everywhere.
